Reflection from Chief Heat Officer Marta Segura
As the holiday season approaches, let's take a moment to reflect on the importance of caring for our health, climate and planet, while we celebrate with loved ones and take a moment to be grateful for the rights we have in the State of California. In Los Angeles, where the sunshine and warmth inspire outdoor gatherings, we can embrace a more climate-friendly approach by making mindful choices and retaining our leadership and innovation in climate solutions that have made California the most economically successful state in the Nation. So, let’s not lose sight of that and that individually, we can reduce waste by supporting sustainable local businesses and nonprofits. Every small action contributes to a brighter, greener future for our beautiful City.
In this season of giving, let us also remember the impact that our choices have on the environment. For example, opting for eco-friendly gifts, reducing your energy consumption, and considering public transportation or biking over driving are all wonderful ways to keep our carbon footprints low. Together, we can enjoy the magic of the holidays, while respecting and nurturing the earth that makes it all possible. Let this time be a reminder of the power we each hold to protect our planet for future generations.
From a public health perspective, let us not forget that fossil fuel emissions and plastics are one of the biggest root causes of cancer, asthma, and other chronic illnesses. If you were to cook with induction stoves instead of gas stoves, you could reduce asthma and asthma attacks in your household. Over the next year, we will seek to make a difference by connecting pollution, toxic emissions, and the excess illness and death in our society, especially in vulnerable communities. I am a proud Angelena and Californian, and yes, I still hope for a future where we seek a healthy, liveable planet for all.
Wishing you a peaceful, joyful, and climate-conscious holiday season filled with warmth, love, and kindness. As we come together to celebrate, may we also find ways to share peace and goodwill with one another, making Los Angeles not just a City of lights, but a City of compassion and environmental stewardship. Here's to a harmonious season of mindful living, connection, and a shared commitment to a more sustainable world.
